ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards 2004/2005

Jason Goldman

Jason Goldman is the director of jazz and Bobby Brooks Memorial composer-in- residence at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. He is also a jazz faculty member at the Thornton School, clinician/education consultant with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and featured arranger for Warner Bros./Reprise recording artist Michael Bublé, with whom he has received a platinum record and 2 gold records. Jason was recently nominated for The Coca-Cola Company/NFAA's Distinguished Teachers in the Arts program for 2003. Jason was also the winner of the 2001 IAJE/ASCAP Emerging Artist Commission honoring Dr. Billy Taylor, one of the most prestigious awards in the jazz composition field.

His debut album The Jason Goldman Nonet — The Definitive Standard, which features Goldman's compositions and nine-piece jazz group, has garnered rave reviews. Mr. Goldman completed an intense study of jazz composition and film composing at the Berklee College of Music in 1998. He was then accepted into the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (TMIJ) and the Thornton School on a full scholarship. As a member of the TMIJ quintet, he performed with various jazz masters worldwide, including a two-week tour of Egypt with jazz great Herbie Hancock.

Mr. Goldman has also performed with or composed for jazz icons such as Wayne Shorter, Christian McBride, Terence Blanchard, Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, Phil Woods, Jon Faddis, Bobby Watson, Kenny Barron and Jim McNeely. He has performed at a variety of jazz festivals and venues around the world including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Tri-C Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Jackie Robinson Jazz Festival, Hawaiian Jazz Festival, Bellayre Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz Heritage Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival and at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
