23, Baltimore, MD
A native of San Jose, California, 23 year-old jazz pianist and composer Jason Flatley began classical piano studies when he was five years old. At 17, he discovered jazz music, and honed his improvisational skills under the tutelage of pianist Reed Kotler. While performing in numerous ensembles in high school, he started playing gigs in the Bay Area as a leader and a sideman at the same time. In 1999 he enrolled in Claremont McKenna College as a math major, and in addition to his coursework, he began composing jazz tunes and gigging in the Claremont area. In 2003 he graduated with honors in mathematics and headed to Baltimore to embark on a Ph.D program in mathematics at Johns Hopkins University. He currently studies jazz piano and composition with Tim Murphy, and classical and new music composition with Judah Adashi at the nearby Peabody Conservatory of Music. As a performer in local venues, Jason is quickly earning recognition in the Baltimore area as an up-and-coming pianist.
