ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards 2004/2005

Robert Borgstede
25, Troy, IL

Bob Borgstede has been an active player on the St. Louis music scene since 1998. In May of 2003 he graduated from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with a Master's Degree in jazz performance. While at SIUE, Bob studied 7-string guitar with the great Rick Haydon. As a student, he had the opportunity to open for jazz guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, playing lead F-guitar with the SIUE Jazz Guitar Ensemble.

During the school year Bob stays very busy as an educator. Currently, he teaches adjunct guitar at University Missouri-St. Louis, McKendree College, Southwestern Illinois College, and St. Charles Community College. He also teaches a student jazz combo at Fort Zumwalt South High School. Over the summer he has taught at numerous summer jazz camps such as the Gulf Coast Jazz Festival, Simpson College Big Band Camp, Drury Jazz Camp, and the Birch Creek Jazz Camp in Door County, Wisconsin. In February 2004, Bob was a featured guest artist and clinician at the Waseca Jazz Festival in Minnesota.

On September 16, 2004, Bob held a release party at Jazz at the Bistro to celebrate the release of his first album as a leader. Entitled Narrative Threads, the album features some of the finest jazz musicians in St. Louis and showcases Bob's unique compositional and improvisational voice. In addition to frequent freelance work, Bob has served as guitarist and musical director for the band Arvell & Co since 1999. Bob's other performance credits include gigs at many great St. Louis venues such as Jazz at the Bistro, the Pageant, the Sheldon Concert Hall, Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center, and the Edward Jones Dome (home of the St. Louis Rams).
