Marian McPartland was born Marian Turner in Windsor, England. She was trained at London's Guildhall School in piano and composition. After being introduced to jazz, her career took a different turn. By the early '40s, Marian was playing jazz for USO shows for GI's in Europe, where she met Chicago-based cornetist Jimmy McPartland, whom she later married and accompanied back to the United States. By the '50s, Marian was enjoying a long residency as the featured performer at Manhattan's Hickory House. She began a prolific recording career, as well, with solo and ensemble albums on many labels, including a self-owned company called Halcyon Records. As a composer, her works include the titles, "In the Days of Our Love" and "Twilight World." Since 1978, McPartland has hosted the long-running and much-honored National Public Radio series, Piano Jazz, which features her in conversation and performance with a wide variety of musical guests. Other accolades include the Kennedy Center's Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Award, Yale University's Duke Ellington Fellowship Award, the National Music Council's American Eagle Award and being named an American Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts. Her Peabody Award-winning series, Piano Jazz, has spotlighted a wide range of guests, from Eubie Blake to Dizzy Gillespie to Rosmary Clooney, from Elvis Costello to Steely Dan to Norah Jones. The Jazz Alliance/Concord label has made numerous Piano Jazz programs available on compact disc.
