Joe Williams was one of jazz's most popular and distinctive vocalists, injecting a swinging, blues feeling into everything he sang. Born in Cordele, Georgia, Williams grew up in Chicago. Church-choir trained, Williams began performing while still in his teens with bands led by Jimmie Noone, working later with Andy Kirk, Red Saunders and the Albert Ammons - Pete Johnson band. In 1951, Williams became a major star on the basis of his hit recording "Everyday I Have the Blues," which became his signature song. He solidified his reputation when he served as vocalist in Count Basie's band from 1954 to 1960. Striking out on his own, he continued to record and tour with jazz notables for the rest of his life.
