Trumpet master Harry "Sweets" Edison was heavily influenced by Louis Armstrong but developed an original style notable for bent-note effects and distinctive use of the mute. The Ohio-born Edison relocated to New York to work in Lucky Millinder’s band but found his greatest fame in the Count Basie Orchestra, which Edison was a member of from 1937 to 1950. The new decade found Edison as an in-demand studio musician in Hollywood, working on film soundtracks and recording sessions under Benny Carter, Nelson Riddle and Lionel Newman. He also continued to record and perform with such jazz artists as Lionel Hampton, Benny Carter, Joe Williams and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis.
