THE ASCAP DEEMS TAYLOR AWARDS
FOR BOOKS, ARTICLES AND LINER NOTES - ON MUSIC

About the awards
The ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards program recognizes books, articles, broadcasts and websites on the subject of music selected for their excellence. The Awards were established in 1967 to honor the memory of composer/critic/commentator Deems Taylor who died in 1966 after a distinguished career that included six years as President of ASCAP.

Eligibility Requirements
Written works must be published in the United States, in English, during the calendar year of 2007. The subject matter may be biographical or critical, reportorial or historical - almost any form of nonfiction prose about music and/or its creators. However, instructional textbooks, how-to-guides, or works of fiction will not be accepted.

Paperbacks that were originally published in hardcover are not eligible. Reprints or translations of works that were previously published outside the United States that are now being published in the United States for the first time are eligible. Program notes, recording liner notes and on-line publications are also eligible.

Submission Guidelines
Application Procedure

There is no official entry form or fee, however all submissions must include a cover letter containing the following information:

  1. The title of book, article, program or liner notes.

  2. Copyright date of book or date of publication for the article (or issue date for recording liner notes).

  3. Name, address, and daytime phone number of all authors of the book or article.

  4. Contact name, address, and daytime phone number of the publisher or publication in which the article appeared.

Materials To Be Submitted

  • 4 copies of each submission are required, i.e. 4 copies of submitted book, 4 copies of articles, etc.

  • Submissions of articles and liner notes are limited to 3 entries per author (articles that were published as a series on a single, specific subject may be considered as 1 entry).

  • Submissions should be placed in letter-sized file folders, one complete submission per folder. (A complete submission is considered all the entries for one author whether 1, 2, or 3 items by that author are submitted. Each of the competition judges will receive 1 folder per entrant so all of an author?s entries must be contained in that 1 folder).

  • For example, John Doe is submitting 3 articles. He will submit a total of 4 folders, each folder containing 1 copy of each of the 3 articles.

  • Generic Music Magazine is submitting 12 articles (3 each by 4 different authors).

  • The magazine will submit a total of 16 folders (4 folders for each author with each folder containing 1 copy of each of that author?s articles).

  • Each folder should be labeled with the full name of the author.

  • Liner notes should be limited to 4,500 words. 4 copies of the liner notes along with 4 copies of the recording must be submitted. Follow the same procedure as with articles, i.e. 4 folders, each folder containing 1 copy of the liner notes and 1 recording should be submitted.

  • No folders are required for book submissions.

  • Submissions will not be returned.

Materials Accepted January 31 through April 30, 2008
