2005 ASCAP Concert Music Honorees

GEORGE PERLE

Gifted and prolific Composer, Educator, Scholar, Musicologist, Author, Theorist. ASCAP celebrates George Perle, in his 90th year, in appreciation of his wonderful music, his many honors and achievements, and for the generosity with which he has shared his many gifts with his students, his colleagues, his friends, and lovers of fine music.





MEREDITH MONK

Composer, Pioneer, Creator of Opera, Music Theater, Film, and Installations; Director, Choreographer, Singer. ASCAP recognizes Meredith Monk as a major creative force in the performing arts and celebrates her 40 years of discovery, exploration and expansion of the boundaries of interdisciplinary performance, and musical composition.





DAVID GOCKLEY

Impresario, Innovator, Courageous Visionary, Producer, Institution and Audience Builder, Commissioner of new work, Composer’s Hero. For 33 years, since age 27, David Gockley, General Director of the Houston Grand Opera, has enriched the opera repertory with 30 world premieres and 6 American premieres, to become the leading builder of opera repertory for our time.





MICHAEL MORGAN

Conductor, Communicator, Audience Builder, Champion of American Music, Distinguished Musical Citizen. ASCAP honors Michael Morgan for his tireless advocacy for the music of our time both on the podium and off; at the Oakland East Bay Symphony, the Festival Opera in Walnut Creek, the Oakland Youth Orchestra, Tanglewood, as Chair of the ASCAP Standard Awards Panel, Adjudicator of the ASCAP Foundation Rudolf Nissim Prize, and above all, for his inspired leadership to expand minority access to the arts.


MEET THE COMPOSER, Heather Hitchens, President

ASCAP honors Meet the Composer for its towering achievements on behalf of American composers and their music. For over thirty years, Meet the Composer has commissioned over 800 works, and in cooperation with presenters and performers, brought thousands of living composers and their music into direct contact with millions of Americans through performances, residencies, commissions, educational outreach and community involvement nationwide. We congratulate MTC President, Heather Hitchens, who since 1999, has strengthened traditional MTC programs and launched exciting initiatives such as Global Connections; New Music, New Donors; Creative Connections; Magnum Opus and Music ALIVE!
