ASCAP's ACE - Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect to find on ACE?

ACE is a database of song titles licensed by ASCAP in the United States. For each title, you can find the names of the songwriters and the names, contact persons, addresses and, in most cases, phone numbers of publishers to contact if you want to use the work. For most of the titles, you'll find some of the artists who have made a commercial recording.

The song I'm looking for was a monster hit! Why isn't it on ACE?

Many songs are not licensed through ASCAP, and so are not in the ACE database. The clearance departments at BMI and SESAC, two other U.S. music licensing organizations, may have information on the song you're looking for.

I'm an ASCAP member, and I have a record of having registered my songs. Why can't I find all my titles on ACE?

Currently the ACE database is derived from ASCAP's performed works title database, i.e., a database of titles that have appeared in one of ASCAP's domestic performance surveys. As ASCAP's new registration format is rolled out, more and more registered works will appear on ACE. (For more information please refer to our ACE disclaimer.) Rest assured that, even though your title is not listed on ACE, it is stored in ASCAP's internal datafiles. Information on songs that have not yet appeared in ASCAP's surveys can be obtained from the ASCAP Clearance Representatives at 212-621-6160.

The record label says the song I'm looking for is an ASCAP song, it's a hit from years ago, and I still can't find it. Why not?

The title may be listed differently on the label of your recording than the way the copyright owner indexed it with ASCAP. Our Clearance Representatives (at 212-621-6160) will probably be able to find it for you. Another reason that the title might not be there is that a dispute exists among the copyright owners — again, the clearance representative has the information you need.

Can I look up a publisher on ACE?

Yes, provided it is an ASCAP publisher reflected on the ACE database. And you will, in most cases, find the address, contact person and telephone number for that publisher. In addition to searching by publisher name, you can perform a detailed search to find a publisher by state, city or area code. Click on a name to get the full contact information. If you are unable to locate a specific publisher on ACE, please contact our Clearance Representative at 212-621-6160.

I called the publisher listed on ACE to get permission to use a title, and they directed me to another publisher. Why?

ASCAP administers only "small" rights. This covers just about every kind of performance, but excludes full theatrical presentations of operas, complete productions of Broadway-style musicals, and the like. These "grand" rights are sometimes administered by a publisher other than the one listed on ACE.

Why are some performers of a work listed and not others?

Performing artist information is used at ASCAP to help identify performances and properly credit the correct writers and publishers of the work. Performing artist information is gathered from record label copies furnished to ASCAP or from the actual performance that appeared in one of ASCAP's surveys.

You can advise ASCAP of additional performers of works written by you. However, in order to avoid listing incorrect performing artist details to works in our data base, we would need to see a copy of label copy and the title and t-code you observed on ACE. (You can obtain the t-code from ACE in the song detail screen.) And yes, you can provide us, by mail or fax, a photocopy of the cover of the album and the listing of the works included on the album.

Can I register my titles on the ASCAP web site?

Yes, through ASCAP's Online Works Registration system members are able to register and maintain their titles. This user-friendly application walks members through a minimum of four registration steps. Successfully entered works are submitted directly to the title database and then, subsequently, to ASCAP's ACE database. Throughout the process, a system tutorial will answer any questions that may arise...
