The Doc Severinsen International Composition Contest, held by co-sponsors the College Music Society and The University of Tennessee, is now accepting submissions. The contest, named after famed jazz trumpeter and ASCAP member Doc Severinsen, recognizes new works that are a fusion of jazz and classical music, and feature trumpet as a soloist with a large ensemble (either wind ensemble or orchestra). The only request from Severinsen: "It should have a melody and include a dialog between the soloist and ensemble."
The first place winner will receive $10,000. The second and third place winners will be awarded $5,000 and $2,000, respectively. Severinsen himself will be among several world-renowned trumpeters to adjudicate in the contest.
The deadline for submissions is Thursday, August 1st, 2013 at 12 noon MT. Winners will be notified on October 15, 2013. Winning pieces will be performed at the 2014 Joint Conference of the College Music Society Southern Chapter, the College Music Society Mid-Atlantic Chapter and the Association for Technology in Music Instruction, which runs February 13-15, 2014 at the University of Tennessee School of Music Natalie L. Haslam Music Center.
