ASCAP member Drew Seeley has done a whole lot in his young life, from co-starring with Selena Gomez in Another Cinderella Story to touring with the High School Musical cast as Troy Bolton and writing and releasing solo albums. This Emmy-nominated singer/songwriter/actor has entertained millions the world over. Now he’s using his considerable talents for a very different reason: to help fight cancer.
This week, Drew Seeley officially released his new single “Fly,” an original song written in honor of Brooke Shockley, a 14 year-old girl suffering from osteosarcoma bone cancer. Drew is the first artist to participate in Music is Medicine’s Donate a Song project, which encourages celebrities to write and record an original song for their fans who are seriously ill. He also happens to be Brooke’s favorite celebrity.
Amidst recording sessions and auditions last summer, Drew donated his time and talents to Skyping with Brooke and writing and recording an original song of inspiration in her honor. “That was the best 9 minutes and 44 seconds of my life!” Brooke exclaimed after their first Skype session (you can see part of the session at the beginning of the official video for “Fly”). Once the song was completed, Drew traveled to the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Oncology unit in Baltimore to perform the song live for Brooke and other patients.
The music video and digital single for “Fly” were released on iTunes on March 6th, 2012. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the song and video will be donated to the pediatric oncology research team at Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Research Center.
“I’m lucky to be able to inspire people by doing what I love,” Drew told DoSomething.org about his experience. He hopes that his song will inspire patients everywhere, as it inspired Brooke.
Drew Seeley stars in ABC Family's upcoming movie musical, Elixir, alongside Chelsea Kane and Sarah Paxton. It’s set to air this Summer.
