ASCAP provides various internship opportunities for college students.
Intern Membership Atlanta
ASCAP'S MEMBERSHIP DEPARTMENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
ASCAP offers qualified students an internship opportunity to learn about the music industry from a "performing right" perspective. This right ensures that writers and publishers of music receive payment in the form of royalties for the non-dramatic public performance of their works. ASCAP's overall purpose is to protect these rights for our members, approximately 410,000 writers and publishers of music, plus the members of foreign societies who license through ASCAP, by licensing users of their music and distributing the royalties that result from this in a fair and equitable manner.
The ASCAP Membership Department Internship Program will provide the student with an opportunity to learn about the way ASCAP recruits new writer and publisher members to our Society and about the way we collect and distribute the license fees to our writer and publisher members as royalty payments. The internship program will also give the student a general understanding of many aspects of the music industry, including the publishing and recording businesses, from this particular perspective.
In addition, to projects of a clerical nature, as an ASCAP intern the student will be allowed and encouraged to attend our various showcases, panel discussions, and workshops that we provide to our membership.
QUALIFICATIONS
Student must be enrolled in an accredited college or university program, which gives academic credit for a business internship program. The college internship program must be coordinated by a director or other program individual who will be able to access our program to ensure that it meets the requirements for college credit. Students are required to provide a statement from the college or university verifying their course of study and the degree program in which they are enrolled. This statement should also indicate that supervised vocational experience is part of the curriculum requirements for that program. Participation in the ASCAP internship program is non-paid and for school credits only.
WORK HOURS
Internship hours must be discussed with your ASCAP Internship Coordinator at the beginning of your internship.
LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP
The student's college schedule and requirements will determine the length of the internship program, however the internship may not exceed one semester.
INTERNSHIP EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated on their internship using any required forms or progress reports from their university or college. The ASCAP Internship Coordinator will meet with students throughout their internship to discuss how the internship is going.
They will also meet with any university or college representative of their program as required. At the end of the internship students are required to meet with the ASCAP Internship Coordinator to discuss the overall evaluation of their experience. We will also ask that the student give us a written evaluation of their experience.
Of course, we reserve the right to end the internship at any time, if we believe that the student is not performing or participating as expected in the internship program.
PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM
ASCAP seeks bright, diligent college students who have an interest in learning about the daily responsibilities and business side of a Performing Rights Organization. Candidates must have strong organization, communication, and computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint (knowledge of Access is a plus). Good typing skills and familiarity with the Internet are also required.

Various Paid & Unpaid InternshipsNew York

ASCAP Marketing and PR Intern
This internship will involve but not be limited to: various music marketing projects including the annual ASCAP "I Create Music" EXPO and other ASCAP events;research/writing assignments for ASCAP's Playback magazine and website (ascap.com), including articles/interviews with songwriters and composers; assist with market research; aid in special events coordination; updating press lists; track and process press clippings; general administrative work like filing, faxing, mailing and photocopying. Good writing and communication skills are essential, as is familiarity with social networking websites and blogging.
Skills in FinalCut and ownership of a MacBook; HTML and CSS skills; graphic and/or web design skills a plus but not necessary.

Public Affairs Internship
The internship offered is within ASCAP's Public Affairs office in New York. The department is responsible for a variety of legislative issues, consisting of national grass-roots initiatives, ASCAP's Legislative Fund for The Arts and various other legislative efforts. The proper candidate will perform/assist with for following:
- Update contact information/status for Grass-Roots participants
- Provide logistical assistance for Grass-Roots meetings
- Assist in the planning and execution of upcoming PAC events (Political action Committee-ASCAP Legislative Fund for the Arts)
- Assist with preliminary plans for ASCAP's performances and educational events in Washington
- Scan/organize a variety of documents
- Organize various materials and file documents
- Data entry, transferring information into Microsoft Access database
- Complete periodic updates using government relations software
- Execute general administrative duties

The ASCAP Foundation Internship
The ASCAP Foundation, established in 1975, is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to supporting American music creators and encouraging their development through music education and talent development programs. Included in these are songwriting workshops, scholarships, awards and recognition programs, and providing grants to 501(c)(3) organizations engaged in educational programs for aspiring songwriters and composers.
This internship is for college credit and will give college students the opportunity to gain experience in special events, fundraising and program development for a non-profit organization.
Since this is a "for credit" internship students must be enrolled in a co-operative internship program.
A variety of skills are required for potential candidates. They include:
- Strong organization and detail-oriented skills
- Team player
- A flexible work schedule (a minimum of 15 hours per week)
- Strong writing and computer skills (including word, excel and Power Point)
